Congress dilemma over Sonia's absence

New Delhi: The flag hoisting on Independence Day at the Red Fort may be an annual event, but with Congress President Sonia Gandhi recuperating after her surgery in the US, party leaders are in a dilemma about who will take her place.

Highly placed sources told NDTV that Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is with Mrs Gandhi in the US, has confirmed he will be back by then. But whether he will take on this symbolic duty is not known yet. In fact, ever since the Gandhi family left for New York on Tuesday, very few leaders were kept in the loop.

Mrs Gandhi was, earlier today, shifted out of the intensive care unit (ICU). She was operated upon on Thursday and remained in the ICU for 24 hours.

Karunanidhi slams Jayalalithaa Govt; calls Tamil Nadu 'a jungle'

Tiruvarur: Hitting out at Jayalalithaa government for foisting "false land-grabbing cases" against his partymen, DMK chief M Karunanidhi said on Saturday that they are not afraid of jail and the Dravidian movement cannot be wiped out by such 'vendetta politics'.

"I do not know how long I will live but am sure that nobody can finish off DMK and the feeling of being a Dravidian will not diminish," the 87-year old leader told a public meeting in his home constituency-cum-native town.

Addressing the meeting organised to condemn the arrest of DMK District Secretary Poondi K Kalaivanan, the DMK patriarch charged the AIADMK government with indulging in vendetta politics and foisting false cases against the party cadre.

"Have we not seen Palayamkottai jail? Do we fear Palayamkottai jail?" he said referring to Kalaivanan's imprisonment there.

Citing the arrest of party MLAs J Anbazhagan and former minister Veerpandi S Arumugam, he wondered whether it was "Nada illai Kaada (is this a state or a jungle), and people live in an uncertainty whether they would be picked up by the police in the mid-night or woken up to see a policeman's face."

Referring to the arrest of Jayalalithaa during DMK rule, he said it was done on the direction of the court. "Even then, she was treated with dignity," he said taking on the police for arresting his partymen in "false" cases.

The protest meeting comes in the backdrop of the Jaylalithaa government's state-wide crackdown on land-grabbing and arrest of several functionaries of the DMK.

Karunanidhi said while the disproportionate assets case against Jayalalithaa was pending for the past 12 years, police were swift in taking action against his partymen on "false charges".

In a veiled attack on Brahmins, the DMK president said there were certain people from a community who were bent upon finishing off the Dravidian movement, but their effort would not succeed.

Zaheer ruled out of England tour, RP Singh called in

New Delhi: Zaheer Khan, the India fast bowler, has been ruled out of the remainder of the series against England. He will return to India and will be replaced by left-arm seamer RP Singh. Zaheer picked up a hamstring injury during the first Test at Lord's, but the BCCI has now said he not only has a recurring hamstring problem but also a right ankle impingement that will require surgery, followed by a 14-16 week period of rehabilitation

Zaheer's problems began on the very first day of the series, when he pulled up midway through his 14th over in the first innings at Lord's. The team management indicated Zaheer could be ready to bowl in the second innings, but he was unable to do so and was ruled out of the second Test at Trent Bridge. There were expectations he would return for the Edgbaston Test but he only got through three overs in the Indians' warm-up match in Northampton, and has now been pulled out of the squad.

Since the first Test, Zaheer had been through light training sessions, and there had been indications from the India camp that he would take part at some stage in the series, which only grew stronger when he was named in the side for the tour game against Northamptonshire. However, he left the field after bowling just three overs.

India had also named Zaheer in the squad for the limited-over matches in England, but he will miss those as well, with RP Singh taking his place. RP Singh has not played for India since 2009, with his last Test coming during India's home series against South Africa in 2008. He was part of India's squad when they last toured England for a full series in 2007. India won the three-Test series 1-0, and RP Singh was the third-highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets at an average of 28.91, behind Anil Kumble and Zaheer.

India have now lost three players from their original squad; Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh were withdrawn after sustaining a stomach and finger injury respectively during the Trent Bridge Test. Zaheer's injury though has been the biggest setback for the visitors. Even as he was hobbling off at Lord's, predictions for the series started to swing dramatically in England's favour. His absence from the next two Tests leaves India with an inexperienced bowling attack, with the 22-year-old Ishant Sharma the most-capped of all the bowlers left in the Test squad.

Uttar Pradesh minister to be booked for triple murders

Lucknow: In what can be seen as a major embarrassment for the Mayawati government, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Awadh Pal Singh Yadav, will be booked for triple murders.

Mr Yadav, his MLC brother Chandra Prakash Yadav, and his son Randeep Yadav will be booked for the murder of a trader, his son and security guard. The murders were committed on June 10.

Aniruddh Singh, the son of the victim, had filed a plea before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court demanding that Mr Yadav and his relatives be booked for the murder of his father and two others.

Today, the CJM of Etah district, Biddhi Sagar Mishra, ordered that a case of murder should be registered against the minister and his relatives. 12 others have also been named in the FIR.

Dravid in, Yuvraj out for ODI series in England

Chennai: Rahul Dravid has made a surprise comeback into India's limited-overs plans, after two years in the wilderness, while the injured duo of Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh are the notable omissions in the squad for the one-day and Twenty20 series against England.

Click here to watch the news report.

Dravid, a regular member of the ODI side for most of the last decade, led India in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. He was dropped from the side following a poor home ODI series against Australia in 2007, but was recalled to bolster an inexperienced line-up in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy in 2009.

His second coming lasted only six matches and he was axed again following India's early exit in that tournament in South Africa. He hasn't been a part of the set-up since, as India surged to World Cup glory in April. With the youngsters in the middle order once again struggling in testing conditions, Dravid finds himself back in the mix.

Yuvraj and Harbhajan both picked up injuries in India's crushing defeat in the second Test at Trent Bridge, ruling them out of action for four and three weeks respectively.

The BCCI's media release did not specify whether the senior duo had been dropped or left out on fitness grounds.

Yuvraj hasn't played an ODI for India since picking up the Man of the Tournament award at the World Cup. He missed the West Indies tour with a chest infection, but scored a half-century on his return to the national side at Trent Bridge before enduring a fractured left hand in the second innings.

Harbhajan has been dogged by poor form since the World Cup, both in the West Indies and in England, leading up to an abdominal strain that limited his contribution at Trent Bridge.

Full squad: M S Dhoni (C), Virender Sehwag (VC), Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kholi, Suresh Raina ,Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra and Parthiv Patel

Telangana issue to be discussed in Parliament Today

New Delhi: The Telangana issue will figure in Parliament on Friday, with the Lok Sabha scheduled to take up a calling attention motion on the issue.

Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj has given notice of the calling attention motion, which will be responded to by the Home Minister P Chidambaram.

The Telangana issue has led to resignation of over a dozen MPs, including several from the Congress party from Telangana region. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is yet to take a decision on the resignations.

It is for the first time that the Telangana issue will figure in Parliament after the MPs' resignation. The government has so far been maintaining that there has to be consensus of all the stakeholders.

While Telangana MPs want the Centre to stick to its December 9, 2009 statement that the government will initiate steps for the formation of a Telangana state, but lawmakers from the rest of the state want Andhra Pradesh to be united.

Congress General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad is trying to find a solution to the issue by holding consultations with lawmakers from all regions.

Kohli, Ojha to replace Yuvraj, Harbhajan in England

Kohli and Ojha will come in as replacements for Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh respectively. Yuvraj has been ruled out for four weeks after he fractured his left index finger from being struck by a Tim Bresnan bouncer in the Trent Bridge Test. Meanwhile the woefully out of form Harbhajan Singh will be out of action for a couple of weeks due to a lower abdominal strain.

The Indian team has been struck with a spate of injuries. Opener Virender Sehwag missed the first two Tests following shoulder surgery and has just joined the team in England. His partner Gautam Gambhir came back into the side after missing the Caribbean tour due to a shoulder injury but was struck on the elbow by a Matt Prior sweepshot in the first Test which kept him out of the Trent Bridge Test. He has been declared fit for the third Test. An ankle injury kept pace attack spearhead Zaheer Khan out of the West Indies tour and on the first day of the first Test in England, he sustained a hamstring strain which left India with just 3 bowlers. There is no word on whether he will be fit in time for the third Test.

India will play a two-day tour match against Northamptonshire on August 5th and 6th ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham which starts on August 10th.
